Skyrim Bug Makes the Game Look Like Silent Hill

A glitch in The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim leads to a visual effect that reminds players of being lost in the fog of Silent Hill.

The Silent Hill franchise has more than its fair share of terrifying monsters, psychological horror, and dramatic twists. However, even those who have never played a Silent Hill likely know one more thing the town and games are well known for: the iconic fog.

Initially introduced as a way to cope with the PlayStation’s limited capabilities, the fog in Silent Hill became a main fixture of the games, leaving fans terrified, wondering what was out there beyond their sight. As such, fog in real life and other games often leaves fans reminded of the town of Silent Hill – and possibly creeped out – just like in this case, with The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

Skyrim has a lot of weather conditions that can transpire in its massive open world, but in this instance, visibility took a hit in part due to a bug. As shared by Reddit user MildlyAngryGuy, naturally foggy conditions in the game combined with filter bug, resulting in a severe lack of visibility and misty conditions. Nearly no NPCs are visible, either, further adding to the sense of spookiness and isolation.

The Silent Hill fanbase has been waiting for a new game for a long time, and as a result, moments like these often remind fans of the good days. Silent Hill has been reimagined in a variety of ways, both by professionals and fans, with some of the latest efforts showing what Silent Hill in the Unreal Engine could look like. It’s not the first time that fans have been reminded of Silent Hill in Skyrim either, with a prior bug causing a thick fog to form over Whiterun.

Epic open-world RPGs and survival horror games don’t often have much in common, but the fanbases are experiencing a similar sense of frustration with their developers. Silent Hill, of course, has remained stagnant for years on end, with the most recent effort to revive it under Hideo Kojima’s guidance going up in flames after he split with Konami. Skyrim, on the other hand, recently passed its tenth anniversary, and the Elder Scrolls 6 is still far off with no official release window.

Silent Hill fans may be reluctant to hope for much more than a spooky, similar experience in Skyrim at this point. However, there could be some good news on the horizon, as a recent leak indicates that Silent Hill news is coming in mid-July. Players will have to wait and see, but there’s still a chance that Silent Hill and Elder Scrolls fans alike will have something to look forward to in the years to come.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
