With rumours of new games or remakes of Silent Hill doing the rounds, one channel decides to show what the original could look like today.
As horror games go, nothing gets a debate heated up quite like a discussion on Silent Hill, specifically the future of it. With Bloober Team rumoured to be working on a remake of Silent Hill 2, the eerie Konami franchise has once again entered the spotlight. At the time of writing, there’s no official confirmation on whether a new entry will emerge, so a team of people has done the next best thing and reimagined the original game through a modern lens.
The YouTube channel Teaser Play recently uploaded a short video that showcases what a Silent Hill remake could possibly look like if built in Unreal Engine 5. The concept trailer actually mashes bits from the first two games into one. The protagonist can be seen walking the streets of the titular foggy town while looking for Cheryl Mason, a la the first Silent Hill, while the opening voiceover from the sequel’s James Sunderland plays. Overall, the video looks pretty spectacular and really shows what a modern entry in the series could look like today.
It should be pointed out that the footage does not represent the development aspects of any official or unofficial Silent Hill remake. It’s simply a concept and an awesome one at that. In fact, TeaserPlay has a number of examples on their channel similar to this. Recently, they showed what Grand Theft Auto: Vice City would look like in Unreal Engine 5. Not only does it appear fantastic, but it also gives food for thought on what last year’s GTA: Trilogy could have looked like had it been handled with more care. In general, TeaserPlay clearly has a knack for showcasing up-to-date iterations of beloved classics, even if they are just artistic re-imaginings rather than actual games.
With so many Silent Hill rumours going around recently, many are holding out hope that Konami or its partners will make some sort of announcement soon. With the loss of Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s Silent Hills project a few years ago, fans have been left wanting more, and the possibility of new games or a remake of the second instalment has many feeling hopeful, even if this is a rumour they’ve heard many times before.
As one of the best psychological horror games of all time, Silent Hill 2 is something of a masterclass in unsettling subtlety that has left an impact on the genre. While Teaser Play’s video is just a concept, some fans may be clinging to the notion that someone, somewhere, is actively looking to bring the dormant series back.
Silent Hill was released in 1999 for the original PlayStation.
