A new PS4 games leak may have revealed more on what Sony has planned for 2019, a year which many analysts believe will be the last that features the PlayStation 4 for as the leading console.

And it’s not just Sony who are gearing up for a busy 2019, with many reports pointing to interesting developments from Microsoft and their Xbox brand.

A new streaming service called Project xCloud is expected to be launched in the coming months, while PlayStation has hinted at their own big announcements.

And there is still the question of the PS4’s remaining lineup of exclusive games, some of which could be some of the best selling first party titles of this generation.

The likes of God of War and Spider-Man will prove hard acts to follow, but what better way to end the current console cycle than with one of the most hotly anticipated releases on the PlayStation 4?

While we know that The Last of Us Part 2 is being launched on the current generation of Sony consoles, we still don’t have a set release date.

The previous months have seen a steady stream of leaks, suggesting that The Last of Us 2 will be arriving in 2019.

But none of these leaks have centered around a single month, making it hard to discern if any one of one them is correct.

The latest report suggests that Sony’s next major first-party release could be arriving closer to the end of 2019.

A recent South American retail listing claims The Last of Us 2 will be launching on PS4 and PS4 Pro in October 2019.

It should be noted that this isn’t coming from Sony and should be taken with a big pinch of salt.

It would make a lot of sense that TLOUS sequel would arrive in October, given it’s a massive launch window for video games.

This would put it in a prime spot to pick up plenty of seasonal sales, however, this would also run against a lot of what Sony has done in the past.

God of War arrived in April 2018, while Marvel’s Spider-Man was made available in September.

Uncharted 4 is believed to be the best-selling first-party game of the PS4 and that was released in May.

It certainly didn’t hurt its chances in the sales charts and makes it seem doubtful that Sony would rely on October for The Last of Us 2.

While October is a great month to release a game in, it will also face a lot of competition from other third-party titles.

And having only just reached March, there’s plenty of alternate months still left for Sony to announce as the launch date for The Last of Us 2.

Sony has confirmed that they will not be at E3 2019, meaning they will be hosting their own events this year.

But the company remains quiet on their upcoming plans, having only just revealed why they have switched their attention away from E3.

Speaking to CNET, PlayStation’s Shawn Layden explained that the LA expo no longer fulfilled it’s original function and could be better served as a fan festival, or celebration of gaming.

Speaking about how the relationship with retailers and Journalists had changed in regards to how gaming news was shared, Layden added:

“Retail has really dropped off. And journalists now, with the internet and the fact that 24/7 there is game news, it’s lost its impact around that.

“So the trade show became a trade show without a lot of trade activity. The world has changed, but E3 hasn’t necessarily changed with it.

“And with our decision to do fewer games — bigger games — over longer periods of time, we got to a point where June of 2019 was not a time for us to have a new thing to say.

“And we feel like if we ring the bell and people show up here in force, people have expectation “Oh, they’re going to tell us something.”

“We are progressing the conversation about, how do we transform E3 to be more relevant? Can E3 transition more into a fan festival of gaming, where we don’t gather there to drop the new bomb? Can’t it just be a celebration of games and have panels where we bring game developers closer to fans?”

With Sony PlayStation readying their own reveals, it appears Microsoft may also have some surprises planned for 2019.

New reports out this week go as far as to say that the company’s next console will be revealed during E3 2019.

Rumours suggest that they will be looking to replicate the success of the Xbox One X by offering two consoles.

One will be more powerful and have a higher price tag, while the other will be more in the shape of the Xbox One S.

Both will have access to the same games library and could be joined by another streaming-only option in the future.

French publication Jeuxvideo believes there will be two consoles announced during the expo, one, code-named Anaconda, and the other, called Xbox Lockhart.

So it will be interesting to see how things pan out for Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s plans in 2019.

Will PlayStation fans get their own big console news? Or will they have to wait longer to find out what comes next?
