The Dragon Ball franchise is in no shortage of games, but fans have rediscovered two long-lost titles online. Dragon Ball RPG and Dragon Ball Wars are two mobile video games from the early aughts that have only been playable in Japan until now.

An online user named @/RockmanCosmo on X (formerly Twitter) shared the incredible discovery on the social media platform. @/YuviApp, a game preservationist, unearthed a copy of Dragon Ball RPG, a mobile video game from 2008. The Japan-only video game was playable on devices suitable for i-mode services.

Dragon Ball RPG Will Finally Be Playable for Fans Outside Japan After Nearly 20 Years

The trial and complete versions of Dragon Ball RPG were preserved, along with another mobile game called Dragon Ball Wars. Like most Dragon Ball games, Dragon Ball RPG was a retelling of the Dragon Ball Z series that began with the “Saiyan” saga and ended with the “Majin Buu” saga. The gameplay was presented from a top-down perspective, transitioning into 2D for turn-based battles.

Footage shared online shows Goku as an adult fighting familiar friends and foes from the show. Super Dragon Ball RPG, an upgraded version of the game, was released in 2010. Due to their limited availability, Dragon Ball RPG and Dragon Ball Wars were unavailable to fans outside of Japan but are now being preserved for the future by fans developing a local server to make them playable.

Dragon Ball fans today don’t have to worry about missing out on the fun, as most related titles are now released worldwide, such as Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero or Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Even smartphone games like Dragon Ball Legends and Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle are released globally and updated timely with the domestic version. However, the rise in costs and manpower for big-budget games on systems like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has impacted the development of future Dragon Ball games by Bandai Namco Entertainment. According to Akio Iyoku, the executive producer of the Dragon Ball franchise, there’s more interest in developing downloadable content for existing games than spending three to five years creating a new one. This is why DLC content based on Dragon Ball Daima is being made for Sparking! Zero and Kakorat while Season 1 of Daima is still being aired, instead of waiting years for a Daima video game to hit next-gen consoles.

Dragon Ball Daima Episode 13 will premiere on Jan. 10, 2025, following its one-week break. Fans will also receive a double dose of Daima on that day, as the anime’s English dub will officially premiere on Crunchyroll. “Goku and company were living peaceful lives when they suddenly turned small due to a conspiracy!” the series’ official description reads. “When they discover that the reason for this may lie in a world known as the ‘Demon Realm,’ a mysterious young Majin named Glorio appears before them.”
