In a surprising development, Battlefield 2042 is getting a crossover with Mass Effect as part of its latest update.
While Battlefield 2024 was met with a negative reception when it first launched in 2021, developer DICE has been working to fix its many bugs and glitches through later seasons and updates. Battlefield 2042’s seventh and final season took place last summer, with EA now looking to shift toward the future of its long-running military FPS franchise.
Battlefield 2042’s zenith has included a crossover with one of EA’s other popular franchises, the chilling sci-fi horror series Dead Space. This crossover took place as part of Battlefield 2042 Season 7 and included a brand-new gameplay mode called Outbreak that pitted a squad of four players against hordes of AI-controlled zombie creatures inspired by 2023’s Dead Space remake. Players brave enough to face this nightmarish threat could unlock rewards like an unlockable skin-themed after Issac Clarke’s spacesuit.
Now Battlefield 2042 is getting a surprise crossover with Mass Effect as part of its latest update, which went live on June 17. This crossover features new character skins pulled from BioWare’s epic sci-fi RPG series, such as N7 armor like the kind worn by Mass Effect protagonist Commander Shepard and weapon skins inspired by the futuristic blasters players used to fend off the sinister Reapers in the original Mass Effect trilogy. This crossover content is being released in two bundles, with a third tying them both together.
Battlefield 2042 Adds Mass Effect-themed Character and Weapon Skins

This Battlefield 2042/Mass Effect crossover might be a sign of greater things to come from Mass Effect, even though there hasn’t been much news from the franchise lately. A new Mass Effect sequel is currently in development at BioWare, as is a live-action TV adaptation at Amazon. The latter is being penned by Fast and Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey and produced by Avi Arad. As for the former, there is plenty of speculation about how the next Mass Effect game could pick up where Mass Effect 3’s controversial ending left off back in 2011.
In the meantime, Mass Effect is joining Dead Space by crossing over with Battlefield 2042, which might come as a shock given that EA and DICE are already at work on Battlefield 6 and there is no word on when the next Mass Effect game will be released. As such, this crossover could be a fun way to hold over fans of both properties as EA gets ready for the future.
