The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog Is The Series’ Highest-Rated Game On Steam

Sonic is dead, but his legacy lives on.

If you told me that the best-rated Sonic game of all time would come out in 2023 and feature the titular blue hedgehog’s corpse, I would have laughed. The joke’s on me, as The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is now the best-rated game on Steam.

Released as an April Fools joke and given away for free, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog has gained over 11,300 reviews (as of the time of this writing) and 98 percent of them are positive. That’s better than the relatively recent Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania, and even Team Sonic Racing.

In fact, according to Sonic Social Team manager Katie “MiniKitty,” The Murder of Sonic is now ranked number 61 on Steam’s highest-rated games of all time.

“Over 1,000,000 of you have grabbed The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and it’s currently the number 61 highest-rated game on Steam of ALL TIME,” wrote Katie. “Absolutely unreal. Thank you all so, so much.”

It looks like she got her numbers from SteamDB. We should note that different sites use different algorithms to rate Steam games’ user review scores. For example, Steam250 has The Murder of Sonic at number 99 of all time. However, it also has The Murder of Sonic as the third-best game of 2023, just behind Resident Evil 4 Remake. That’s an excellent company for a franchise mascot with more than a few questionable games in his past.

And while that’s just user reviews, the critical consensus is also wildly positive. On Metacritic, The Murder of Sonic is the third highest-rated Sonic game behind Sonic Mania Plus for the Switch and Sonic CD for iOS.

In case you’re out of the loop, The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog is a visual novel where you create your own Sonic-style character (sort of like Sonic Forces) and try to solve who killed Sonic. It’s Amy’s Birthday, so Sonic and the gang have taken over the Mirage Express to throw a murder mystery party. You’ll interrogate various characters from Sonic’s illustrious franchise to try and figure out who offed the Blue Blur.

There’s some question as to The Murder of Sonic’s canonicity, but the game itself makes plenty of references to other Sonic titles, and it has so much positive publicity that Sega is almost bound to include this April Fools joke as part of the wider Sonic universe even though it wasn’t made by Team Sonic. It was made by the Sonic Social Team, which we didn’t know could even build a game until six days ago.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is available now on Steam for zero dollars.
