The multiplayer shooter that was given to all owners of Resident Evil 8 has dropped below 200 concurrent players already.
Resident Evil Re:Verse, the multiplayer third-person shooter that allows players to compete against others while playing as a number of Resident Evil heroes and villains, has already set a record low number of players — only a handful of days since its release.
Re:Verse launched on October 28th, and came bundled for free to players who owned Resident Evil 8: Village — a game that has an estimated 6.4 million units sold, won numerous awards, and was one of the fastest-selling Resident Evil games in Capcom’s history.
Despite those numbers, Re:Verse — again, a game that came free for owners of Resident Evil 8 — has flopped tremendously, with a maximum peak of slightly over 2,000 players and just under 200 players playing as of this writing.
The game was originally meant to launch for owners of Resident Evil 3 Remake, but was delayed due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. Alpha testing periods revealed a game that was lacking in content and polish, and after the disappointment that was Capcom’s previous two multiplayer entries (Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil: Resistance,) Re:Verse was likely shelved to make adjustments.
Currently, Re:Verse features only two maps, The Baker House and Raccoon Police Department, and six characters: Leon, Jill, Chris, Ada, Claire, and Hunk. In addition, players can morph into a bioweapon following their death, with increasingly powerful bioweapons being summoned depending on how many T-Virus canisters players collect. The bioweapons playable include a random mold creature, a lizard bioweapon, Jack Baker, Tyrant, and Nemesis.
With so few players, anyone still playing will find it harder to get into matches, which will continue to drive the game population down. Furthermore, the only progression in the game is tied to a Battle Pass, which costs $10 USD to unlock.
It isn’t all doom and gloom for Resident Evil fans, however — the Resident Evil 8 DLC, Shadows of Rose, was met with universal acclaim, and the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake looks stellar, featuring incredible moments such as parrying a chainsaw with your knife, and setting a cow on fire to bulldoze through enemies.
