For those of you who may not know, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland went to the polls yesterday and voted in a general election. The country’s stumbling exit from the European Union has been at the forefront of voters’ minds for several years now, and the constant politicking from all sides has arguably had a knock-on effect on the national mood, regardless of your political stance.

With the election results this morning revealing big winners and losers, there’s obviously a contingent of voters today who have woken up particularly glum, and it seems that Nintendo UK may have tapped into that mood with a cheeky Animal Crossing: New Horizons poster, as revealed on the company’s official Twitter account:

As you can see, Nook Inc. proprietor Thomas Nook Esq. and his employees Timmy and Tommy are advertising the chance to get away from it all and start life anew on his desert island. Of course, the release date is a few months away yet, so you’ll have to brave the British winter as you wait for Friday 20th March, but it certainly seems that Nintendo is giving a cheeky little wink to gamers who might be blue today.

You could argue things must be dire if you’re turning to renowned swindler Tom Nook for escape and comfort in these trying times! Or perhaps we’ve misjudged the tanuki. Either way, the poster made us laugh.

Games and politics – a classic mix that video game enthusiasts the world over universally adore. Is this a sly nod to the election, then, or an innocent bit of advertising for an upcoming game? Let us know your thoughts below.
