Krafton has revealed that PUBG: Battlegrounds will move to Unreal Engine 5 in 2024, and introduce a host of changes, including destructible environments.
If you’re yet to start unlocking PUBG: Battlegrounds achievements, this could be the best year to finally land, loot, and survive in one of the best battle royale games on Xbox. Krafton has announced that PUBG is getting destructible environments and is moving to Unreal Engine 5 later this year. As revealed by Krafton for PUBG’s seventh anniversary, Krafton has spoken about some of its plans for the popular battle royale in 2024. Later this year, PUBG will transition to Unreal Engine 5 while also laying the foundations for User Generated-Content (UGC). The developer will also be adding destructible environments to the game, which Krafton says will give players the ability to “strategically destroy sections of buildings or construct defensive barriers, opening new attack routes or securing areas.” Environmental destruction will be “previewed” via an update in April.

Alongside those new features, Krafton will also introduce some other sweeping changes to PUBG: Battlegrounds this year, “designed to escalate tension and offer fresh challenges.” New gunplay updates will be introduced every two months with a focus on player feedback, new “survival-focused” items are in development, special modes are being refined for casual play, and a team vs team system will see players collaborate to compete against other teams for the highest score.
Updates are planned for the game’s existing maps, as well, which will integrate “features and content from new seasons, collaborations, or modes.” We can also expect to see an influx of cosmetic items, including partnerships with top vehicle brands and progressive weapon skins that “reflect players’ preferences through a series of upgrades.”
As for matchmaking, Krafton is refining the Matchmaking Rating system to help place players of similar skill levels in games, while bots in normal matches are being improved to “offer a more immersive and meaningful experience, featuring more natural actions and diverse scenarios.” Over on the Ranked side, Rank Points will be receiving some changes next month via a pilot test, which will see kills scored higher to better reflect player skill levels. We’ll also see new Ranked rewards arrive to make the mode somewhat more appealing, as well as the addition of PUBG’s new Rondo map in the Ranked play pool.
In keeping with Krafton’s plans to make PUBG: Battlegrounds more enjoyable for players, “anti-cheat measures will be intensified” in the coming months, expanding into all game modes including normal matches. It’ll come with a host of upgrades to the system’s current deep learning technology, and Krafton says, “Significant achievements and future anti-cheat plans will be shared transparently through dev letters, maintaining open communication with the community.”
We don’t have any dates for when any of these changes will roll out to PUBG: Battlegrounds players, but we can expect everything to arrive this year.
