The PlayStation 5 leaks are coming thick and fast ahead of the next-gen platform’s holiday 2020 release date. The latest report suggests that a sequel to a huge PS4 exclusive will come to the next-gen system soon after launch, potentially within its first year on sale. If the rumours are true, then the Xbox Scarlett could be in big trouble.
According to former Game Informer senior editor Imran Khan, Sony has already greenlit a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Speaking on the Kinda Funny podcast, Khan said that the game could launch as early as 2021, most likely as Sony’s big holiday exclusive (via Gamingbolt).
With the PS5 supporting cross-platform play, there’s a good chance the game could launch on the PS4 and PS5.
Marvel’s Spider-Man getting a sequel shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, especially given the success of the PS4 exclusive.
The critically-acclaimed Spider-Man game has sold over 13 million copies, making it the best-selling superhero game in the US.
Interestingly, it’s also the game Sony has been using to demonstrate the capabilities of the PS5 system.
If Spider-Man 2 does get a 2021 release, then the PS5 console’s first year could be one of the best ever.
Previous reports suggest that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will get a sequel, as well as Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Zero Dawn 2.
Horizon Zero Dawn 2 was seemingly confirmed earlier this year by voice actor Janina Gavankar, who played Tatai in the game’s Frozen Wilds DLC.
Speaking to a fan at the Star Wars Celebration, Gavankar – who also voiced Iden Versio in Star Wars Battlefront 2 – said that she knew some secrets about the upcoming release.
“It’s incredible, wait ’til you see the sequel,” Gavankar said (via Reddit). “You’re gonna die – I know some secrets! – you’re gonna die.”
Guerrilla Games would then start hiring for an “ambitious open-world project”, which was presumed to be Horizon Zero Dawn.
The same person who successfully revealed the release date for The Last of Us Part 2 (before it was delayed) would also reveal that Gran Turismo 7 would be a PS5 launch title.
Twitter user @PSErebus said that Gran Turismo 7 would launch alongside the PS5 on November 20.
Sony has been pretty open about the next Gran Turismo game being in development, with series creator Kazunori Yamauchi talking about the future of GT earlier this year.
“I think in terms of races themselves and physics GT Sport has really reached the best place that we’ve ever reached – we’re at a very good place,” he said.
“On the other hand, obviously we’re working on the next Gran Turismo already, and the world of sport we’ve achieved through GT Sport is something I’ve always imagined to be the future of Gran Turismo. We were able to establish that now.”
According to Yamauchi, the new game will look to past releases for inspiration, and may also support VR.
As for the PS5, the belief is still that the console will be officially unveiled next February, followed by select showcases throughout the year as we countdown to launch.
PlayStation 5 system architect Mark Cerny recently discussed the new console’s impressive specs.
Instead of working at a software level, Cerny confirmed that the console would gave ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware.
The PS5 will also feature a completely redesigned user-interface, where the emphasis will be on seeing your options and instantly joining games.
