Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Promises Cinematic RPG Experience On Mobile In 2023

Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios have announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a new mobile RPG coming next year, where you have to participate in “massive real-time group battles.”

While we won’t see Mortal Kombat 12 for a little while longer, according to Ed Boon, fans of this universe already have another upcoming title just on the horizon. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a new role-playing spin-off featuring “the first mobile-exclusive story experience and console-quality cinematics,” is a follow-up to 2015’s Mortal Kombat Mobile, and will launch globally on iOS and Android devices sometime in 2023.

The project is currently in development at NetherRealm, the team behind the latest series of instalments, as well as Injustice. In Onslaught, your goal will be to create a team of fighters from a vast roster of characters and then unleash them in real-time group battles to stop a new dark and dangerous threat — pretty classy MK stuff.

The additional details are still under wraps, as all we ever got regarding the project is its first official artwork you can see above. It appears that Onslaught will bring back many of the fan favourites, such as Shao Kahn, Kitana, Quan Chi, Jade, Shinnok, and more. It is likely the title will be a classic free-to-play game with a lengthy list of playable characters you can unlock gradually while playing.

“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” said Ed Boon. “With Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

“Onslaught is a testament to why Mortal Kombat has been a top gaming franchise for over 30 years, as the NetherRealm team continues to innovate and bring new gameplay to fans,” president of WB Games David Haddad said in a press-release.

There is currently no exact date for when Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be available on your phone, but you can already sign up on its official website here to keep an eye on further announcements.
