A Helldivers 2 developer recently responded to a post on Twitter comparing Helldivers 2 to Microsoft’s legendary Halo franchise. Helldivers 2 is currently one of the most popular video games online, shattering records both on the PlayStation Store and Steam. Helldivers 2 is literally an overnight sensation but shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
To say the release of Helldivers 2 was a success would be the understatement of the century, with the game-breaking records left and right. Helldivers 2 consistently ranks in the top five most-played games on Steam, with player counts and sales figures blowing past expectations on the PlayStation 5 as well. Helldivers 2 pits up to four players against harsh alien environments where they must utilize a very limited amount of resources in order to accomplish their mission. Helldivers 2 is almost entirely focused on creating memorable and enjoyable moments between players, with even the worst missions ending in hilarity and a good laugh more often than not.
Helldivers 2 Developer Speaks Out Against Negative Comparisons
A post on Twitter ranked Helldivers 2 as being better than the entirety of the Halo franchise, a bold claim for sure but one that at least 1,000 other people agreed with. However, this comparison did not sit right with Helldivers 2 developer Johan Pilestedt, asking, “Why compare? Just let gamers love and enjoy both, either or neither. We need more compassion and union in the world, and less rivalry.”

The developer asks why gamers must constantly compare popular titles in the first place, stating that the world needs more compassion and unity. While Helldivers 2 is incredibly violent and satirical, this is a message that is reflected in the game itself, requiring players to form a winning team based on good communication skills and a general sense of friendliness. The overall aesthetics of the two games are similar, with Helldivers dropping down onto various uninhabitable planets through pods similar to the ODST pods in the Halo series. However, the actual gameplay of each game is quite different.
We need more compassion and union in the world, and less rivalry.
Helldivers 2 follows the original Helldivers, which released in 2015 and was developed by Arrowhead Studios, the same developer behind Helldivers 2. The original game was always popular, but fans of the series would never have imagined the sequel taking over the world like Helldivers 2 has.
