‘Fortnite’ Reveals Its Chapter 6 Season 2 Battle Pass Skins And They’re Very Bad

0

Fortnite released a pretty universally beloved Chapter 6 season 1 late last year, one that took inspiration from Japan both for its aesthetic and its many crossovers.

But now we’re headed something wildly different for Chapter 6 season 2, subtitled “Lawless” about a crime-ridden city called…Crime City.

In what is a pretty unusual step, Fortnite laid out the entire set of battle pass skins at once ahead of the release this upcoming week, and I have to say, this is…a really bad pass. Probably one of the worst I’ve seen, barring some crazy alternate styles that make everything better.

Dill pickle

You can see it above (click here for big version), and the characters we “know” are a new gangster version of Midas, this Dill pickle rapper already used heavily in the marketing and then, of course, Sub Zero from Mortal Kombat, who will allegedly be joined by Scorpion later in the season.

These skins don’t look good, barring maybe one exception, this Wolf guy with a full cap. He’s kind of rad. But the female skins are incredibly generic in this day and age of genuinely good Fortnite-original skins, and they’re just so basic they look like those level one skins that used to have earned upgrades over time. But at best, these will have alt styles. I don’t want to play as a pickle rapper. I think there are better Midas skins than this one, though he’s maybe the second-best one here.

Sub Zero

Sub Zero? Fine, but this is the extremely stripped-down, OG, basic version of the character that is not exactly looking like one of the better crossovers Fortnite has done. Again, maybe there are “modernized” alternate styles, but I’m just not really impressed here. Maybe he has some cool ice effects, at least.

Unlike season 1’s Japanese-influenced crossovers, I’m not sure what the dimension-hopping Mortal Kombat has to do with this theme, but no doubt there’s more to come. I’ve wondered out loud if Fortnite may be able to finally land a Grand Theft Auto collab with some of the protagonists from that series, given the season theme and GTA 6 out later this year, but I won’t hold my breath.

Fans are not exactly wild about the season concept as once again, it involves breaking into vaults to steal things, which we’ve done a few times already. It’s not that the playercount of the game is about to crash or anything, but I can’t remember the last time I was this uninspired by a seasonal preview. We’ll find out how it goes next week.
