Forspoken Reveals Hefty PC System Requirements

Ahead of its launch week, Forspoken reveals its PC system requirements, and it seems like the barrier to entry will be high for PC gamers.

Just a week prior to launch, Forspoken has finally revealed its PC system requirements, and the hardware required to play the game will be nothing to scoff at. At the low end, fans can expect to play Forspoken at 720p 30fps with a GTX 1060, while 4K will require the latest from Nvidia and AMD’s high-end GPUs.

Forspoken is a brand-new IP by Square Enix and the first blockbuster release in what seems like a big year for the company. Notably, Forspoken is one of the first current-gen-only games in what will likely be a year filled with PS5-exclusive titles as the industry moves away from last-gen hardware. On the PC side, Forspoken was supposedly on track to be one of the first games taking advantage of Microsoft’s new DirectStorage API on Windows 11, but it seems like since mid-2022, Square Enix has been hush on the matter.

Following a recent developer presentation as Forspoken enters its launch week, Square Enix revealed the game’s finalized PC system requirements. It seems like Forspoken will be quite a performance hog if Square Enix’s performance targets are accurate. For a minimum 720p 30fps experience, PC players will require an Nvidia GTX 1060 or a Radeon RX 5500 XT GPU paired with an Intel i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU. At the high end, Forspoken requires a recently launched RTX 4080 or a last-gen Radeon 6800 XT for 4K 60fps. The requirements between the two GPUs at the high end are questionable as the 6800 XT is roughly the same performance-wise as an RTX 3080; however, fans should hold out for official benchmarks at release.

Forspoken PC Requirements

  • MINIMUM (720p 30fps):
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i7-3700
    • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB or Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB
    • Memory: 16GB
    • Storage: 150GB HDD or more
  • Recommended (1440p 30fps):
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700K
    • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB or Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 8GB
    • Memory: 24GB
    • Storage: 150GB SSD or more
  • Ultra (2160p 60fps)
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5800X or Intel Core i7-12700
    • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB or Nvidia Gefore RTX 4080 16GB
    • Memory: 32GB
    • Storage: 150GB NVMe SSD or more

Square Enix has also launched a PC Features Highlight video for Forspoken showcasing PC-exclusive features like ultrawide screen support up to 32:9, keyboard and mouse support, and AMD FSR 2.0 support. So far, there is still no mention of DirectStorage integration on PC. Moreover, PC players have been weary of the game lately, seeing as Forspoken reportedly includes the controversial Denuvo DRM. However, these concerns will be addressed soon enough.

With one week away from launch, it won’t be too long until PC players see if Forspoken is worth its high barrier to entry. The recent Forspoken PS5 demo shows that this isn’t the best-optimized game, even on current-gen consoles. Per Digital Foundry, the game regularly upscales from a sub-1080p image to try and reach 60fps on the PS5 performance mode. So far, it seems like Forspoken struggles to reach native 1440p and 4K, even on the higher resolution quality modes. As the industry targets new hardware, perhaps performance woes and high system requirements are the growing pains of a generation getting underway.

Forspoken launches January 24, 2023, for PC and PS5.
