Bungie reveals that a human error has caused an issue with a new cheat detection system in Destiny 2, resulting in several incorrect bans.
Bungie reports to users that a newly implemented cheat detection system has resulted in a series of unwarranted bans for players in Destiny 2 this week. According to the announcement, it would appear that the cause of these players being banned from Destiny 2 is the result of human error that accidentally flagged several accounts.
This announcement comes after a week of players reporting being wrongly banned on Destiny 2, with several having their accounts restored after going online to report the false ban. Some players still report that they are being denied access to the game, although Bungie has stated that the faulty cheat detection has been removed until further notice.
The clarification about these recent bans comes from the Bungie Help arm of the developer’s social media outreach, acknowledging that the unwarranted bans have been taking place and giving a small hint at the cause. While Bungie does not go into specific detail on why the cheat detection system in question failed, it appears that this was caused by human error. This likely means that a common item or an interaction with one of Destiny 2‘s newer activities was flagged as an indicator for cheating, and innocent players unknowingly triggered that flag throughout the week.

At the time of this writing, there isn’t much information to go on, with most fans left to only speculate on what part of Destiny 2 was being flagged with this new cheat detection. However, Bungie has announced that there will be more information to come in the next This Week at Bungie blog post that the developer uses to regularly update players every Thursday. Additionally, the new cheat detection is gone, but all previous systems to detect and ban cheating in Destiny 2 are still in place and will continue to work on shutting down cheaters.
The lack of detail in this announcement does leave the nature of this error and the situation for players that are still banned unfortunately vague. Hopefully, Bungie will be able to further explain exactly what happened and how players will be able to properly get their accounts restored alongside the next set of announcements from the TWAB blog post. Either way, dealing with cheat detection in an online title like Destiny 2 can be a difficult one for fans to argue over. As rampant cheating can ruin both competitive and cooperative activities, Bungie needs to crack down, but there does need to be a clear way to appeal when these types of unwarranted bans destroy accounts.
