Chechik shared on Twitter that her landing broke her back in two places.
This past weekend at San Diego’s TwitchCon — the convention for the popular streaming app Twitch — among the many attractions was a foam pit, set up by Lenovo to promote its series of Legion gaming PCs.
The pit was supposed to be used for “gladiator fights” between contestants using foam noodles and standing on platforms not far above the pit, with foam blocks in the pit to soften any falls.
Unfortunately, over the course of the weekend, several people were injured as a result of the foam pit. One of those people was Adriana Chechik, a famous Twitch streamer, who jumped off one of the pillars and made what looks like an extremely painful landing in the pit:
Adriana Chechik (@ChechikTv) looks seriously hurt after jumping in the foampit. Looks like #TwitchCon cheaped out on the padding and amount of foam. pic.twitter.com/BRPSs1EKVI

Adriana Chechik later confirmed what looked like a serious injury, tweeting that she’d broken her back in two places and would be going in for surgery.
Well, I broke my back in two places and am getting surgery to put a meter rod in for support today. Send your support. When it rains it pours and I am definitely feeling the rain right now.

On Twitter, someone shared a diagram of how these foam pits are supposed to be built — unlike Lenovo’s, which was extremely shallow and whose foam blocks didn’t provide much cushion from the floor.
These pits only work when they are DEEP. You can see just how shallow this one is because they're just stacking foam cubes on the floor. It is NO WONDER that people got hurt in this activity, this was an exceedingly dangerous set-up. pic.twitter.com/8hSM2fOiNu
