Bethesda Game Studios teases a big new update that’s coming to its open-world sci-fi RPG Starfield in the very near future.
Bethesda has revealed that Starfield‘s first major update for 2024 is coming within the next few weeks, with it first hitting Steam Beta on Wednesday, January 17. Starfield was a big hit when it first launched, breaking records for Bethesda. But while Starfield reviews were largely positive at first and the game managed to attract millions of players, public opinion on it has started to sour quite a bit.
Starfield complaints have become more common and the game’s player count has dropped dramatically, with the ambitious open-world sci-fi RPG having its player count outdone by Skyrim, which is well over a decade old at this point. However, Bethesda is certainly not giving up on Starfield, with plans to release significant updates for the game on a regular basis.
In fact, Bethesda has announced that the first major Starfield update in 2024 will arrive on Wednesday, January 17 through Steam Beta before eventually making its way to all players a couple of weeks later. The update promises to include over 100 fixes and improvements, though detailed patch notes have yet to be released. While Starfield fans wait for the complete rundown of what they can expect from the game’s first big update for 2024, Bethesda has revealed some of the changes that are on the way.
New Starfield Update Highlights

- Over 100 fixes and improvements
- Additional widescreen support
- Improved textures, lighting, and shadows
- Sun disk geometry
- Planet ring shadows
- Bulldozed objects reappearing when returning to an outpost
It seems this big new Starfield update will primarily be focused on fixing bugs and improving the game from a visual standpoint. Bugged Starfield quests will be addressed, which should ensure players have a smoother experience as they play through the game. Additional widescreen support is being added, with improvements on the way for Starfield‘s textures, lighting, and shadows. Sun disk geometry and planet ring shadows are also being added, which should in turn make what was already an impressive-looking game look even better.
This kind of update is designed to improve Starfield, but it’s not the kind of update that is likely to attract lapsed players back to the game. Luckily, there are many more Starfield updates planned for 2024, and eventually, Bethesda will release the game’s first DLC expansion, Shattered Space, as well. Bethesda has big plans for Starfield, so fans of the game should have plenty to look forward to in the months and years ahead.
