Game Rant speaks with Derelicts’ creator about its extreme weather events and intense boss fights, as well as what these bring to the survival game.
Derelicts, an unreleased survival game, aims to captivate players with its challenging gameplay and innovative mechanics. Offering a fresh take on the survival genre, Derelicts incorporates extreme weather events and intense boss fights to elevate the player’s experience. These elements not only make the game more dynamic and unpredictable but also increase the level of engagement and immersion for players. These features contribute to the game’s unique appeal, providing a memorable experience that distinguishes it from other games in the genre.
Moreover, Derelicts has been designed to keep players alert, as they must continually adapt to the ever-changing environment and face new challenges in the game’s expansive world. The combination of extreme weather events and formidable boss encounters ensures that players are never short of obstacles to overcome. Through a blend of strategic thinking, resource management, and sheer determination, players must navigate the world of Derelicts and achieve success against all odds. Game Rant recently spoke with Derelicts creator Romain Piquot regarding how these mechanics push his survival game forward.
Extreme Weather Events Pose a Risk to Derelicts’ Base

One of the many challenges that players will face in Derelicts is the impact of extreme weather events on their base. Blizzards and tornadoes can wreak havoc on the player’s carefully constructed sanctuary, creating a sense of urgency and vulnerability. These natural disasters force players to remain vigilant and adapt to ever-changing conditions.
The game’s weather system doesn’t just pose a threat to the base itself; it also impacts the player’s ability to access resources. For example, when the water wheel freezes during cold weather, it stops working, leaving players with limited options for power generation. These challenges require Derelicts players to diversify their energy sources and make sure that the base keeps on running regardless of the conditions.
“When a player gets too strong, the game can get boring. I wanted to add random events that keep the players on their toes.”
However, the more dire consequences of a natural disaster become evident when an aforementioned extreme event devastates half of the camp. According to Piquot, these events are necessary to divert from the cozy existence of building a base without distractions. This base-building game is truly about survival, the developer says, and the storm that follows the calm could be mutated enemies, harsh conditions, and more.
Dungeons and Boss Fights Await Under Derelicts’ Sandbox World

In addition to the surface-level sandbox world inspired by games like The Forest, Derelicts is also going to include a series of interconnected underground dungeons. These subterranean lairs present players with unique challenges and fearsome bosses, which they must conquer in order to progress in the game. The dungeon design is inspired by the multilayered levels found in games like Dark Souls, offering a deep and intricate environment for players to explore.
“One of my inspirations for the map is Dark Souls, especially the multilayered levels where you can go deeper and deeper. I really love this aspect and want to implement it in my game as well.”
Each dungeon culminates in a boss fight, and each boss guards a key item needed to advance the game’s story. This Metroidvania-style approach encourages exploration and fosters a sense of accomplishment as players unlock new areas and overcome powerful adversaries, while also allowing a simple and easy-to-follow approach to the storyline. The bosses in Derelicts are designed to test the player’s skills, equipment, and strategy, ensuring that they must continuously upgrade and adapt their approach to succeed. As players delve deeper into the world of Derelicts, they will find themselves facing increasingly difficult challenges and adversaries.
Derelicts is set for a Steam Early Access release in 2024.
