Square Enix’s newest mobile RPG is all about two girls in love.
Square Enix has announced a new mobile fantasy RPG called Towatsugai that tells the story of a lesbian couple separated by death who must find each other again. It’s coming to Android and iOS “soon”.
One fan has even added English subs to the reveal trailer, while also revealing that the title “can be translated to ‘Eternal Coupling’,” furthering the focus on the couple. The teaser opens with the two walking hand-in-hand in the snow, followed by what looks to be them lying dead before one of the pair begins narrating.
“Our hands were separated,” the teaser states (as translated by @aitaikimochi). “This is a memory we had when we were alive. Yet it is also a memory of our second death. You might laugh if I say this, but I feel like I’ve been waiting for you all this time.” The two speak back and forth to each other, confirming they’re a “couple” – there’s no skirting around the topic or queer baiting. From the get-go, it’s set in stone that these two are in love.

Towatsugai is being produced by Square Enix in partnership with Animate, and it currently has a teaser page live on the Japanese Square Enix website, as well as its own Twitter account. However, there’s no concrete release date, so it’s unclear when we can expect it to hit our devices.
Aside from Towatsugai, Square Enix has trademarked “Symbiogenesis” which many are taking to be a new Parasite Eve game, or perhaps a spiritual successor. The original was an adaptation of Hideaki Sena’s novel that was also adapted as a movie and manga, released before Square and Enix merged into one.
