Mutant Football League, the spiritual successor to Mutant League Football, does what the original couldn’t do and announces a sequel.
The 1993 American football game Mutant League Football for the Sega Genesis was a cult hit, even spinning off a cartoon show that ran between 1994 and 1996. It wasn’t successful enough to lead to a direct sequel, but two and a half decades later it would lead to a spiritual successor in Mutant Football League. Mutant Football League only became a reality due to a 2017 Kickstarter project that raised $60,000. That initial success has led to Mutant Football League attaining something the original Mutant League Football never got to — a sequel.
On Thursday, developer Digital Dreams officially announced that it’s working on Mutant Football League 2, a sequel to its 2017 spiritual successor to Mutant League Football. Mutant Football League is all about violent combat between teams of unique mutants, structured into a semblance of a football game. What better way to celebrate that than with a sequel that offers even more and goes even harder than the original.
Mutant Football League 2 starts by adding the eighth mutant to each team’s roster as a fourth receiver, making for more offensive options in every play. There will also be more plays and formations to choose from, offering new complexities in gameplay. Weather conditions can now change mid-match, a factor players will have to deal with unexpectedly. There will also be an improved collision system that could dramatically change gameplay. The depth of Mutant Football League 2 should be a giant leap forward.

Digital Dreams will also be adding new game modes to Mutant Football League 2, the biggest of which will be Dynasty Supreme franchise mode. Dynasty Supreme franchise will allow for custom team creations, as well as drafting from the MFL. It should make for a more compelling football sim experience than what was otherwise available.
The improvements don’t stop there, either. Mutant Football League 2 will be taking a step forward compared to the first game and will be launching on next-gen consoles. That enables the team at Digital Dreams to also improve the visuals of the sequel with improved lighting and shadow effects and smoother animations.
New game modes, updated visuals, new and updated gameplay systems, and more await players in Mutant Football League 2. Of course, there will also be plenty more mutants and action, too. It’s crazy to think that it took 25 years for a mutant-based football game to find enough success to get a sequel, but with a fanbase as dedicated as Mutant Football League has, it’s well-earned.
